‘LOOKIN’ FOR …

The 1980 soundtrack for the movie “Urban Cowboy” has a lot of great songs, one of which is Johnny Lee’s “Lookin’ for Love (in all the wrong places)”. I don’t remember much about the movie, but I like the soundtrack. In his song, Johnny is looking for something, in this case, love; but he is looking in the wrong places. Similarly, we spend a lot of our lives searching for something; love, happiness, wealth, success, power, acceptance, peace… it’s a long list of possibilities. But much like Johnny, we look in the wrong places and often we are looking for the wrong things.

The January devotions in Jesus Calling are addressing this searching process and the month began with Jer 29: 11, “For I know the plans I have for you, “declares the Lord… Some additional points made since the month began include

1. “Don’t waste energy regretting the way things are or thinking about what might have been. Start at the present moment- accepting things exactly as they are- and search for My way in the midst of those circumstances.”
2. “Intersperse… peaceful interludes abundantly throughout your day. This practice will enable you to attain a quiet and gentle spirit which is pleasing to Me.”
3. “My peace is the treasure of treasures; the pearl of great price. It is an exquisitely costly gift, both for the Giver and the receiver. I purchased the Peace with My blood. You receive this gift by trusting Me in the midst of life’s storms.”
4. Finally, on Jan 19 these words: “Let Me displace worry and fear at the center of your being… I am the goal of all your searching. When you seek Me, you find Me and are satisfied”; and one of the scripture references is “Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.” Philippians 4: 7 (The Message).

We’re all searching for something; we just need to make sure we’re searching for the right thing(s) in the right places(s).
