“TAKE MY YOKE…”

We don’t see or use yokes in our culture now; farming is still hard work, but technology has given today’s farmers many mechanical tools and powered equipment to make the job easier and quicker. Today’s farmers can tend much greater fields and produce greater crops because of these aids. But before the technology revolution a yoke was used to join two work animals, mainly oxen, together to produce more.

It is a large wooden beam with two loops that fit around the animals’ necks helping them to share the load of pulling a plow or wagon. Two working together can do more work without exhausting one working alone.

When we try to live our lives alone it’s like one blind animal working by himself. We get tired, weary and discouraged by decisions we have to make and the work we have to do. We ignore the well-known verses in Matt 11: 28-30 where Jesus says, “’Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.’” Can you imagine what it would be like to be living daily in a yoke like the one pictured above with Jesus on the other side? The One Who “knows the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Hard decisions become much easier when we are yoked to the One Who “knows our future and the plans He has for it”. Our work becomes easier for His “burden is light”.

Our normal operating mode is like the rich fool in Luke 12: 16-21 whose farm produced a great yield and he had nowhere to store the crops. He just on his own logic decides to tear down his buildings and build bigger ones. God called him a fool; and said that night his life would be demanded from him. “Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”

The bottom line is we are incapable of making wise decisions for ourselves and our future without consulting the One Who already knows our future and His plans for it. Today’s devotion in “Jesus Calling” says, “Much, much stress results from your wanting to make things happen before their times have come. One of the main ways I assert My sovereignty is in the timing of events. If you want to stay close to Me and do things My way, ask Me to show you the path forward moment by moment. Instead of dashing headlong toward your goal, let Me set the pace. Slow down, and enjoy the journey in My Presence.”
