BE STILL

In 1999 Steven Curtis Chapman released his “Speechless” album and one song on the CD is called “Be Still and Know”. The text for the song comes from Psalm 46: 10 which says “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” The song’s lyrics are:

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is holy
Be still Oh restless heart of mine
Bow before the Prince of Peace
Let the noise and clamor cease

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is faithful
Consider all that He has done
Stand in awe and be amazed
And know that He will never change
Be still

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is God
Be still
Be speechless

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is our Father
Come and rest your head upon His breast
Listen to the rhythm of
His unfailing heart of love
Beating for his little ones
Calling each of us to come
Be still
Be still

I have emphasized a few lines that I think are important. We live busy lives; all the hustle and bustle distracts us from the fact that the Creator of the universe wants to spend time with us in a special relationship. “Be still” is the first thing we need to do when we try to develop that relationship. “Bow before the Prince of Peace” in recognition of Who He is and what He offers in this relationship. “Let the noise and clamor cease” reminds me of Jesus calming the stormy seas. Mark 4: 39 says “He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’” I think that’s what He says to us as well. Once we are still and quiet we can “consider all He has done” which will lead us to “stand in awe and be amazed.”

“Be still!” It’s the only way we can hear the voice of our Father.
