Back in 1972 Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band released a song about being on the road called “Turn the Page”. The song describes the hard parts of being on the road, “…when you’re ridin’ 16 hours and there’s nothing much to do and you don’t feel much like ridin’ you just wish the trip was through… you pretend it doesn’t bother you but you just want to explode…” It’s easy for us “commoners” to think that rock stars, actors, even gospel quartets have a wonderful life travelling around to different places and as far as we can tell making lots of money. But I’m sure it’s a hard hard life until the point that fame overtakes you and maybe you can fly instead of ride a bus for 16 hours. Segar’s song points out many of the difficulties of being on the road.
Then in 1998 Willie Nelson released “On the Road Again” and his message is “I can’t wait to get on the road again, the life I love is making music with my friends and I can’t wait to get on the road again… goin’ places that I’ve never been seein’ things that I may never see again.. I can’t wait to get on the road again…”
Tomorrow night, December 31, 2018 we will “Turn the Page” to January 1, 2019 on our life’s road. I think our attitude will influence how the year will go for us. If we adopt Bob Segar’s view of the hard times of 2019 I wouldn’t expect much to go our way next year. But I think the new year holds great opportunities and promises for us and personally “I can’t wait to get on the road again.” HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!!
