Many of our Christmas decorations are piled on the sofa and coffee table waiting to be stuck in a box for another year. The tree is still up with the ornaments on it, but it waits for the same fate as the other decorations. We had our family Christmas dinner last night and exchanged presents; it was a really great party. But now the party’s over and the house is waiting to be put back in order and the refrigerator waiting to be cleansed of all leftovers.
Every year it seems to be the same story; all of the hustle and bustle of the advent season leading up to Christmas and the celebration of Christ’s birth. We read the Christmas story, celebrate communion, and maybe attend a Christmas Eve worship service. Finally December 25 comes and goes and we breathe a sigh of relief while feeling a bit letdown because the fun is over.
But is the party really over? The prophet Isaiah didn’t think so; here’s what he said about the Messiah’s coming in chapter 9: 6-7
“For unto us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, EVERLASTING Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be NO END. He will reign on David’s throne and over His kingdom establishing and upholding it with peace and righteousness FROM THAT TIME ON AND FOREVER. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”
Yes we’ll put away the decorations that we’ve enjoyed for a few weeks and life will return to normal. But the party is definitely not over; in fact, it’s just beginning!
